The news of a bomb detonating on the outskirts of Denver near his new place of employment nearly had Victor Abrams frozen in place. Every instinct in him told him this move had been a bad idea. His military career in explosives had ended traumatically. But the panick-stricken face of Jodie Chen across the office bullpen had him now running toward another explosion.

“Jodie, what do you need?” His voice rose as he came out from behind his desk. His K-9 partner, Cleo, jumped up and followed. Cleo was a yellow Labrador who had been with him for the last six years of his military duty. She specialized in explosives detection, particularly underwater bombs.

“I had an appointment with a woman in need of protection. She was supposed to be here an hour ago. I think she’s in that fire. She’s Deaf and might not be able to hear the rescuers. She just video-called me, but all I could see was smoke. I have to go over there, but I need a handler. Tyson would never let me go alone. I’m an admin, not an officer.”

“Then let’s go. I’ll drive.” He reached for his keys and led the way toward the door. He stopped and turned back.

Jodie was gnawing on her lower lip and remained in the same spot. For some reason the woman didn’t trust him. Things had been fine the first few days after he’d arrived, but soon after that, Jodie kept her distance, avoided him deliberately.

He’d even brought her daisies as an olive branch. He never saw it again and figured she’d tossed it.

“Jodie, this woman needs help,” he said. She couldn’t argue with that.

“You’re still on probation,” she said.

“I don’t think she’ll care.”

Jodie squeezed her beautiful amber-and-brown eyes in indecision, and Victor wished he knew how to relieve her of her doubts in him. All he could do was show her that he could handle this job.

He hoped he could, anyway.

“You can trust me,” he said.

She glanced in the direction of her office, but then sighed and took her first steps toward the exit. He was glad to see her drop her animosity toward him for the matter at hand. Together with their K-9s by their sides, they headed out to the private parking garage, which was attached to the unit. The only cars parked were their own. With the dogs loaded in their kennels in the back, Victor turned over the ignition of his K-9 SUV and pulled onto the road with only the smoke as a direction.

Jodie pulled up a map on her phone and watched the sky with a worried expression. “I can’t believe Monica’s in there. When she called me, all I could see was smoke. I have to let the firemen know that someone’s inside. Don’t take the highway. It will slow us down.” She gave him directions that bypassed the heavy traffic.

Victor had no idea who Monica was, but now wasn’t the time to figure that out. Stopping Jodie from harming herself in any way was his only concern.
